Northampton Saints boss Jim Mallinder believes his side are beginning to generate some valuable momentum as they prepare to face Racing 92 and Dan Carter in Pool 3 of the European Rugby Champions Cup.

Saints travel to Paris this weekend sitting on top of the pool after a home win over the Scarlets and a fine victory on the road at Guinness Pro 12 champions Glasgow.

The Aviva Premiership outfit lost both meetings against the French team last season, including a 20-11 defeat at Stade Yves du Manoir, when the teams were again drawn together in the pool stages.

It will be a tough test for the Saints, particularly with All Black great Dan Carter in line to make his Racing 92 debut on the back of experiencing Rugby World Cup glory.

But Northampton have won their last four matches in all competitions, and director of rugby Mallinder and his men will travel with confidence.

“We are not playing brilliantly but we are winning games and we are generating some momentum,” said Mallinder. “We are working hard for our victories, we are doing okay but we are not getting carried away.

“We have got some big players who are out at the moment and we have big games coming up. But the young players in the squad are stepping up and winning rugby matches for us.”

But prop Alex Waller is fully aware of just how difficult a test Racing will be as the Saints target revenge following those pool-stage defeats of last term.

“You never want to go into big European games on the back of losses so we have something we can build on,” he said.

“But we are fully aware this is going to be a massive test. They have a big squad, full of internationals and star names so it will be a real challenge.

“We did not have the best result down there last year and they also beat us here in the home game, so we want to go and put in a decent performance and hopefully get a better outcome than we did last time there.”

Racing 92 may have moved imperiously into the Champions Cup quarter-finals with a record breaking win over the Scarlets last weekend

Dan Carter’s helped Racing 92 to an impressive bonus point win over Northampton Saints at the Stade Yves-Du-Manoir.

The World Cup winner kicked three conversions on his debut and produced an accomplished display as Racing made light work of the Saints.

Henry Chavancy, Eddy Ben Arous and Brice Dulin touched down before the break and a second from Dulin and a late try from Juan Imhoff completed the rout for the home side.

All Black legend Carter was involved in Racing’s first try as he made space in midfield and fellow countryman Joe Rokocoko moved the ball out wide for Chavancy to go over in the corner.

Carter’s first points for Racing were met with a huge applause when he nailed a conversion from the touchline with trademark accuracy.

A superb last-ditch tackle from Tom Stephenson stopped Imhoff getting Racing’s second after quarter of an hour but they didn’t have to wait long before Ben Arous powered his way over from close range for the home side.

Carter added his second conversion before a JJ Hanrahan penalty gave the visitors a brief foothold in the game.

But that soon disappeared when veteran lock Victor Matfield tried to move the ball out wide with the Saints in attack but his pass was intercepted by Dulin who raced 70 metres down the field to score.

Racing secured the bonus point three minutes after the break when Dulin got his second try after a devastating run from prop Ben Tameifuna.

Stephenson thought he had finally got the breakthrough for Saints with 20 minutes to go but after crossing the line the play was called back by referee George Clancy for a forward pass from replacement outside-half Stephen Myler.

Both sides then enjoyed periods of pressure in the final quarter but Racing saved their best for five minutes from the end when they produced a devastating counter-attack that finished with Rokocoko putting Imhoff over for their fifth try.
