Brive ensured they didn’t slip up again in Russia in Round 3 and will now go in search of another bonus point win over Enisei-STM this weekend to consolidate their position at the top of Pool 3.

The Russians have ambushed some good sides this season and last on home soil, but Brive were too strong up front and played with the tactical nous needed to quell stiff opposition. With three games in succession on the road, life will only get tougher for Enisei from now on.

Their wins over Worcester Warriors and the Dragons showed in the opening two rounds what they are capable of at this level, and earned them top spot in the pool table. But Brive, who were beaten 10-7 in the same fixture last season, weren’t about to let Enisei spoil their 100th game in the Challenge Cup.

Forwards coach Didier Casadei was full of praise for the way in which his side handled the difficult conditions in Sochi and their game management. Now he wants more of the same in the return leg to give his side the chance of qualifying for the quarter-finals for the first time since 2014.

Having played their first three games away from home, Brive now have a distinct advantage going into the second half of the pool campaign and another full-house of points against the Russians – they beat them 33-3 at home last season – will put them in a very strong position at the top.

Brive took firm control of Pool 3 as they completed a bonus-point double over Enisei-STM to move clear at the top.

There were two tries from American speedster Taku Ngwenya among a haul of six for the home side in a game that saw four yellow cards dished out by English referee Tom Foley. The Russians picked up three of them and Brive one.

Having taken the lead with a third minute penalty from Iurii Kushnarev, the visitors then lost Mikheil Gachechiladze to the sin-bin three minutes later. While he was off, Benito Masilevu crossed for the first of home tries and Thomas Laranjeira added the extras.

South African lock Johan Snyman was next to score midway thorugh the first-half, Laranjeira again hitting the target with his conversion, before Ramil Gaisin became the second Enisei player to see yellow. A minute later, No 8 Sisa Koyamaibole extended the lead with try No 3.

Laranjeira’s conversion made it 21-3 before Kushnarev made up for an earlier miss by adding a second penalty. That made it a 15 point gap at the break, although Brive lost Wilhelm Steenkamp to a yellow card a minute before half-time.

Not to be outdone, Enisei picked up a third yellow nine minutes into the second half. This time it was Viacheslav Krasylnyk who left the field and two minutes later Ngwenya crossed for the first of his brace of tries.

That earned Brive the bonus point and no sooner had they achieved that goal than they began to ring the changes. Enisei hit back with two tries from Shamil Magomedov, but Ngwenya’s second and a final score from Julien Le Devedec made it a good night’s work for the home side.
