Dragons stole second spot from Bordeaux Begles in Challenge Cup Pool 1 with a superb five-try performance at Rodney Parade.

  • As the final whistle went, the Welsh region were forced to wait on results at Toulouse, Brive and Stade Francais Paris to find out if they had secured one of three best runners-up berths.
  • They were set on their way by an Elliot Dee try in the first half after a Ben Volavola penalty had given the TOP14 side the lead. He later missed two further penalties before half time.
  • After the break, Ashton Hewitt's burst set up Cory Hill for a pick-and-drive over the line, converted by the returning Gavin Henson.
  • Wing Fa’asiu Fuatai scored a try on the overlap for the Frenchmen and scrum-half Jules Gimbert's converted try then put them 17-12 in front.
  • But that was as good as it got for Bordeaux as Hewitt charged down a kick for a breakaway Dragons try, prop Lloyd Fairbrother flopped over from a scrum and Pat Howard waltzed through with three minutes left.
