Two former winners of Europe’s premier club rugby trophy come head-to-head at the Kingspan Stadium on Friday night to kick off the 2017/18 Champions Cup season, live on BT Sport. 1999 winners Ulster Rugby open up in Pool 1 with the visit of Wasps, who have twice been crowned as kings of the continent.
- Wasps have won five of the six meetings between the two clubs in European competition. Ulster prevailed in their last home meeting in 2001-02.
- Ulster have won 13 of their last 17 home matches against English opposition at the Kingspan Stadium.
- No player beat as many defenders in the Pool stage last season as Ulster’s Charles Piutau (28). The former All Black is well known to his opponents this week, having also topped this chart two seasons ago in the colours of Wasps.
In-form wing Jacob Stockdale scored one try and made a second as Ulster Rugby staged a fine second-half fightback to win a tight Pool 1 game against injury-hit Wasps in Belfast
- Stockdale's try was his fifth in five games and earned him the man-of-the-match award.
- Christian Lealiifano took over the goal-kicking from John Cooney and landed two crucial late penalties.
- Ulster's win was their sixth victory in seven games this season.
- Wasps' defeat was their fifth in a row and Lealiifano's second penalty denied them a losing bonus point.
