Newcastle and Glasgow set for maiden European clash

Newcastle Falcons' Luther Burrell

Newcastle Falcons host Glasgow Warriors in the EPCR Challenge Cup Round of 16 on Friday, in a first European meeting between the sides.

Newcastle have won each of their previous four games against Scottish teams in the Challenge Cup, while Glasgow have only won one of their six games against English opposition in the competition (drawing one and losing four).

To get to this stage, Newcastle came second in EPCR Challenge Cup Pool A, while Glasgow finished ninth in Heineken Champions Cup Pool A.

The match kicks off at 20:00 (UK & Irish time) at Kingston Park and is available to stream on epcrugby.tv.

Other key facts:

  • Newcastle’s most recent win against a Scottish team was in January 2006 against Border Reivers.
  • Newcastle have won six of their eight home games in the knockout stage of the EPCR Challenge Cup (losing two), scoring more than 20 points in each of those eight matches.
  • Glasgow have only won one of their six games against English opposition in the EPCR Challenge Cup (drawing one and losing four) and have lost each of their three away games in that run – although those three away games were all against Saracens.
  • Glasgow will be playing in the knockout stage of the EPCR Challenge Cup for the third time. They’ve lost both previous matches at this stage, against Saracens in the 2006/07 quarter-final and against Montpellier Hérault Rugby in the Round of 16 last season.
  • Newcastle have averaged 34 kicks in play per game in the EPCR Challenge Cup this season, a joint-high alongside Lyon; they are the only team to make more than 1000 kicking metres per game this season (1105).
  • Glasgow’s Zander Fagerson has made five dominant tackles in European competition this season, the joint most of any player alongside Castres Olympique’s Filipo Nakosi.
  • Ross Thompson slotted 15 of his 17 placekicks in the Heineken Champions Cup this season. His 88% success rate remains the best of any player to attempt more than 10 kicks at goal in Europe’s top tier in this campaign.
  • Newcastle’s Brett Connon has gained 1072 metres from his kicks from hand in the EPCR Challenge Cup this season. Only Sam Davies – who has made 20 more kicks – has made more than him (1769).
  • George McGuigan is the only player to have scored multiple tries for Newcastle in the EPCR Challenge Cup this season (2), including one in Round 5; he had not scored a try in his previous 18 appearances in the competition.

Key quote:

Newcastle head coach Dave Walder: “We won up there in a pre-season game with the last play of the game, but you can’t take too much from those friendlies. We know they’re a well-drilled side with quality players, but those are the kinds of challenges you want when you have knockout European rugby at your home ground

Steyn double as Glasgow win at Newcastle

Glasgow wing Kyle Steyn in action against Newcastle

Wing Kyle Steyn scored a try brace as Glasgow Warriors saw off a spirited Newcastle Falcons effort to reach the EPCR Challenge Cup quarter-finals with a 27-17 victory at Kingston Park on Friday night.

The visitors never relinquished their lead after a dominant opening to the match, but having trailed 19-3 at half-time, Newcastle battled well in the second period.

Johnny Matthews and Josh McKay went over for Glasgow in addition to Steyn’s double, with Ross Thompson landing two conversions and a penalty.

Will Montgomery’s try, converted by Brett Connon, gave Newcastle hope at 19-10, but Glasgow proved too strong and too streetwise.

Joel Hodgson converted his own try on 66 minutes, but the damage had already been done and Glasgow could close out victory without any major scares.
