Brive will aim to keep up their formidable record against Italian clubs in Europe when they visit Calvisano in the Amlin Challenge Cup on Saturday.
The French side travel to the Peroni Stadium on the back of 14 wins out of 16 games played. Brive, who currently lie ninth in the Top 14, enter the competition in confident mood having beaten last season’s league champions Castres 34-0 last weekend.
Yet they have not won away from home this season following a 25-18 loss at Stade Francais and a 12-12 draw with Grenoble.
But, after a year out on European action, the 2011 Amlin semi-finalists will be keen to get back to adding some more silverware on the continent to restore their proud reputation of the past when they claimed the 1997 Heineken Cup and finished runners up 12 months later.
They will look to their multi-national squad for inspiration with the likes of South Africa’s Riaan Swanepoel, Australian wing Alfie Mafi and Fiji number eight Sisa Koyamaibole in their ranks.
Calvisano, who have only won five games in Europe, finished bottom of their group in last year’s competition and will hope to improve on that standing this time around.
However, they won their home game – beating Bucuresti Wolves 34-20 back in January. The Romanians are in the same pool as Calvisano once again and Pool 3 is completed by Aviva Premiership side Newcastle Falcons.
A try four minutes from time by replacement Lucas Lyons saved Brive from defeat in Italy as they salvaged two points from a 20-20 draw in Pool 3 of the Amlin Challenge Cup.
Rugby Calvisano led for much of the game and even had an 80th minute shot at goal to take the victory, but Kelly Haimona’s kick drifted wide. Nobody would have complained had they won.
Haimona had a hit and miss day after opening the scoring with a 10th minute penalty. He then missed with two further shots, allowing Thomas Laranjeira to level midway through the first-half.
But the outside half was able to convert the try from Italian international full back Benjamin de Jager after 28 minutes to give the home side a 10-3 lead. Brive responded quickly, lock Simon Pinet crossing for a try which Laranjeira converted, before Haimona brought the first half to an end with another penalty.
Calvisano failed to take advantage when Brive lock Tjiuee Uanivi was sent to the sin bin two minutes after the restart. Haimona missed with a third shot at goal and Laranjeira levelled matters at 13-13 with a successful penalty of his own.
Now it was the turn of the home side to lose a player to the bin, hooker Sami Panico picking up 10 minutes, but Brive weren’t able to make their numerical supremacy count either. Laranjeira missed the chance to put his side ahead with his boot and the Italians hit the front again when they conjured up a try for wing Michele Visentin.
This time Haimona was on target with the conversion and Calvisano had to hold on for 16 minutes to take the points. Nearly, but not quite. Lyons’ try brought Brive back into the equation and Haimona’s fourth miss of the game proved costly.
