Grenoble host Viadana at Stade Lesdiguières on Friday with both teams targeting their first win in the Amlin Challenge Cup.

The French club crashed to 37-6 defeat at the hands of Top14 rivals Bayonne in Round One, with Nicolas Bezy scoring their only points.

But that defeat was mild in comparison to Viadana’s 90-17 reverse to London Wasps at Stadio Comuncale Pierluigi – their second highest loss in European competition.

The Italian outfit conceded 14 tries in the heavy defeat but managed to cross the whitewash through Anthony Michael Fenner and Andrea Barbieri.

The two sides have never met in European action but Grenoble boast a formidable record against Italian opposition, with four wins from four.

They rested several key players for the clash with Bayonne but will be determined to bounce back on their home patch to ensure their European campaign is kept alive.

Viadana, who returned to the Amlin Challenge Cup following a three-year absence from European action, will be aiming to avoid falling to their 10th straight defeat in cross border competition.

The Italians have not won in Europe since recording a 21-15 victory over Mont de Marsan in 2008.

Grenoble hit Viadana for six tries to kick-start their Amlin Challenge Cup campaign.

Cedric Beal, Jordan Michallet and Daniel Kilioni all scored two tries apiece to seal Grenoble’s first win of the competition. And those six tries were enough to lift them into second place in Pool 4.

Yet in a game of two remarkably contrasting halves, neither side managed to muster a single point after the break at Stade Lesdiguieres.

Having suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of Bayonne in the opening round, Grenoble were quickly off the mark when flanker Beal stormed over on eight minutes and Nicolas Mezy kicked the first of his five conversions.

Full-back Michallet then skipped over twice in the space of eight minutes, either side of a yellow card for Viadana skipper Matteo Minari, to open a 21-point lead after 20 minutes.

Olly Barkley pounced on a Viadana mistake to release wing Daniel Kilioni who wrapped up the bonus point inside 30 minutes.

Kilioni then crossed again within six minutes after Beal also claimed his second try of the game.

Viadana must have feared the worst, trailing 40-0 after 34 minutes but they showed some of the quality that saw them crowned Italian champions last season.

Grenoble lock Alten Hume was binned and Viadana took advantage as wing Daniel Yakopo scored.

Keanu Apperley-Iti kicked the conversion on the stroke of half-time for what was to be the final points of the game. A tightly contested second half proved fascinating viewing but failed to deliver any more scores.
