Enisei-STM coach Vakil Valeev hopes his Russian rookies will continue to show signs of progress as they prepare to continue their European Rugby Challenge Cup adventure against Brive in Sochi.
The Russian outfit are making their first appearance in continental competition, and put up creditable performances in their Pool 1 defeats against Connacht and Newcastle last month.
Now, Valeev’s men face another stern examination at the hands of French Top 14 outfit Brive, who are going well in their domestic league, lying fifith in the table, and are looking to bounce back from their defeat to Connacht in Ireland in round 2.
Connacht found the long journey out to Siberia and the freezing conditions made for an uncomfortable and challenging afternoon’s work against the tournament newcomers, and Valeev hopes the lessons learned from their loss at Newcastle can help them take the game to their next opponents.
“These matches are very difficult for us and the opponents are a lot stronger, but we will continue to strive to improve because this is an important opportunity for Russian rugby,” said Valeev.
“We have returned home from playing Newcastle and worked very hard on our game and cutting out the mistakes we made.
“We hope to improve our attacking play as against Newcastle we did not threaten as much as we would have liked to.
“But we are gathering information all the time in this tournament and it is only going to help us get better and we want to show that improvement.”

Enisei-STM clung-on to claim a famous first-ever European Challenge Cup win with a 10-7 triumph over French heavyweights Brive.
The competition debutants built a 10-0 lead at half-time thanks to a try from hooker Nazir Gasanov and five points from the boot of Iurii Kushnarev. The former European champions woke-up after half-time and got back into the match with a Thomas Acquier, but the hosts held on to claim a famous win. The Siberians now move level on four points with Brive in Challenge Cup pool one.
It was tight first quarter as Enisei-STM looked to make their mark at home. The Russians may have suffered a heavy defeat at Newcastle, but they pushed Connacht Rugby all the way in their 31-14 round one loss. And they showed they are not just here to make-up the numbers when they snatched the lead on the half-an-hour mark.
Hooker Gasanov crashed over with Iurii Kushnarev adding the extras for an early lead. It got even better moments later when kicker Kushnarev landed a penalty to give the hosts a dream 10-0 lead over the former European champions.
But the French side were given a rocket at half-time and came out firing with a try from Acquier. The replacement hooker charged over and Nicholas Bezy converted to cut the gap to just three points. But the Russians showed their true grit to cling-on to their three-point lead in a bid to secure their first-ever win in a European competition. It looked like Brive would break the resistance, but there was no way through and Enisei claimed a famous first triumph in Europe.
