Bordeaux-Begles head into their Round 5 clash with Mogliano with their quarter-final hopes hanging by a thread despite an impressive win over Newport Gwent Dragons last time out.

Anything less than a win over the Italians will automatically mean an early exit, although it would be a huge shock if Mogliano were to leave the Stade Andre Moga with a first European victory.

The real difficulty for Bordeaux comes elsewhere this week as the Dragons host Bath, while a massive test lies ahead if they are still in the mix the week after when they head to England. Previous Heineken Cup and Amlin Challenge Cup winners Bath know that a draw in Wales would secure top spot in Pool 2 a week early but, even if they lose in Newport, Bordeaux will still have to win at The Rec and then hope Mogliano cause some sort of upset at home to the Dragons in Round 6 if they are to progress for the first time since 1996.

Bordeaux have been on the back foot since Round 1 when Bath won 15-6 in France to take immediate control of the pool. Former Wasps hooker Raphael Ibanez has since watched his side see off Mogliano with a bonus point in Round 2 before the back-to-back games with the Dragons saw them well beaten at Rodney Parade prior to winning the reverse fixture 32-13.

Their victory in Italy wasn’t straightforward either, as maximum points weren’t secured until three minutes from time on October 19 when full back Romain Lonca put the gloss on a previously tight encounter. Bordeaux ran out 32-20 winners at the Stadio Comunale Maurizio Quaggia, with Nicolas Sanchez’ conversion denying Mogliano their first point in two seasons of continental competition.

Mogliano’s performance in the first encounter will ensure they travel with hope rather than trepidation but the fact that they have shipped 50 and 63 points respectively on their two previous away games in the pool suggests an upset is highly unlikely.

Bordeaux-Begles will stay alive in Pool 2 for another day at least after they eased to a 10-try triumph over Rugby Mogliano on Friday night.

The Top 14 team knew that a victory of any sort would see them avoid a premature exit until Saturday afternoon at least when pool leaders Bath head to Newport Gwent Dragons.

And they achieved that target with minimum effort as they raced into an early lead and never looked in danger of letting that advantage slip.

Former Heineken Cup winning hooker Raphael Ibanez saw his Bordeaux side score twice inside the opening 10 minutes and there was never likely to be any way back for Mogliano from there on in. The first score came courtesy of a penalty try just five minutes in, with the second coming from inside centre Thibault Lacroix four minutes later.

The third try followed through Marco Tauleigne after a quarter of an hour and, with scrum-half Baptiste Serin kicking all three conversions for a 21-0 lead, Mogliano were starring down the barrel of a cricket score.

But they stemmed the flow as the opening period wore on and kept their line intact for the remainder of the half thanks to some dogged defence and a growing number of unforced errors from the hosts.

That mini-resurgence was ended just two minutes after the restart, though, as Lacroix crossed for his second score and his side’s fourth try.

With the bonus point in the bag, Bordeaux kicked on, adding a fifth try through blindside flanker Gauthier Gibouin two minutes later and a sixth from Patrick Toetu before the second period was nine minutes old.

Robert Lilomaiava and Charles Brousse added further scores before Argentine full back Joaquim Tuculet bagged a brace either side of a consolation try from Enrico Bacchin.
