Edinburgh aim to stretch unbeaten home run

Edinburgh fly-half Blair Kinghorn

Edinburgh Rugby will be looking to stretch their superb unbeaten home record in the pool stage of the EPCR Challenge Cup to 18 matches when they host Section Paloise in Friday night’s Round 5 Pool C tie at the DAM Health Stadium.

Pau’s TOP 14 rivals, Union Bordeaux-Bègles, are the only side to have avoided defeat in the Scottish capital during that that time, drawing 16-16 there in November 2019.

Other key facts:

  • This will be the first European meeting between Edinburgh and Section Paloise, and the first time the TOP 14 side have travelled to Scotland since October 2000, when they beat Glasgow 46-24 in the Heineken Champions Cup pool stage.
  • Section Paloise have lost eight of their last nine away games in the EPCR Challenge Cup, with a 47- 19 victory against Italy’s Rugby Calvisano the only exception in this run.
  • Only USAP (40%) have recorded less territory during this season’s EPCR Challenge Cup than Edinburgh (43%) and Section Paloise (41%).
  • Edinburgh’s Cameron Hutchinson beat nine defenders in Round 4 of this season’s EPCR Challenge Cup, more than any other player. It was the third highest total for defenders beaten by a player in a single EPCR Challenge Cup match this season.

Eight-try Edinburgh secure Pool C top spot

Pierce Phillips goes over for Edinburgh's seventh try against Pau

Edinburgh Rugby scored eight tries to beat Section Paloise 54-5 at DAM Health Stadium on Friday night, sealing their place in the EPCR Challenge Cup Round of 16 as they finished top of Pool C.

Hooker Stuart McInally kickstarted their rout on three minutes, with the first half seeing flanker Connor Boyle cross for a brace in addition to further scores from scrum-half Henry Pyrgos and prop WP Nel.

The tries continued to flow after the break, with wing Ramiro Moyano crossing either side of an effort from lock Pierce Philips.

Replacement full-back Thomas Carol dotted down for a late consolation for Pau, but the TOP 14 side exit the Challenge Cup after finishing bottom of the pool.

Edinburgh await confirmation of their Round of 16 opponents, which will be determined by games taking place tomorrow.
