Win is a must for Glasgow

Glasgow Warriors scrum-half Ali Price launches his line in the Heineken Champions Cup

Glasgow Warriors need a win to be sure of progressing to the knockout stages of the Heineken Champions Cup when they host Stade Rochelais on Saturday – and the omens are bright for the Scottish side.

Currently in the final qualifying spot from Pool A, Warriors have won four of their last six home games against TOP 14 sides in the competition. However, they lost their most recent such match – and that was against Stade Rochelais in December 2019 (7-12).

The match at Scotstoun Stadium kicks off at 8pm and is beiog broadcast on BT Sport and beIN SPORTS.

Other key facts:

  • Stade Rochelais have won two of their three games against Glasgow Warriors in the Heineken Champions Cup, with those victories coming in Round 1 this season (20-13) and during their only previous meeting in Glasgow (12-7 in 2019/20).
  • Stade Rochelais have won their last two away games in the Heineken Champions Cup, as many as they had won in their first seven games on the road in the competition. Two of their four away wins in the competition have come in Scotland.
  • Glasgow Warriors (19.7) and Stade Rochelais (17.5) are two of only four teams to average fewer than 20 kicks in play per game in the Heineken Champions Cup this season. Leinster Rugby (19.5) and Bath Rugby (17.5) are the others.
  • Jack Dempsey (Glasgow, 14.3) and Gregory Alldritt (Stade Rochelais, 14.0) have averaged the most carries per game of any player to feature more than once in the Heineken Champions Cup this season.

Quotes:

Glasgow captain Ali Price: “We have to have a reaction [to defeat at Exeter] and I know we will have a reaction in training and then leading into our home game against La Rochelle. We needed to definitely win one of the last two Pool games, so now the pressure is on us.”

Glasgow face nervous wait after Stade Rochelais defeat

Stade Rochelais' Pierre Boudehent goes over for a try

Glasgow Warriors face an anxious wait over their Heineken Champions Cup fate after Stade Rochelais claimed a 38-30 win at Scotstoun Stadium on Saturday night.

With Glasgow’s Pool A campaign now over, the Scottish region must hope that Montpellier Hérault Rugby don’t pick up a point when they welcome Exeter Chiefs tomorrow – or they will miss out on qualification for the Round of 16.

With Glasgow harbouring hopes of a win to secure their knockout stage spot, La Rochelle went over for the first try of the match on 19 minutes courtesy of Raymond Rhule.

Glasgow fly half Ross Thompson and La Rochelle counterpart Pierre Popelin took it in turns to display their kicking prowess throughout the first half, but the visitors went into the break six points up thanks to Paul Boudehent’s try in overtime.

Glasgow had been celebrating just a few minutes before, believing that a knock-on had put an end to the French side’s attacking intent for the first period.

The hosts came out firing at the start of the second half, with a try from Josh McKay within seconds of the restart putting them in front.

But after that the errors began to pile up, and tries from Pierre Bougarit and Pierre Boudehent, plus thee more penalties, two from Popelin and one from replacement Ihaia West, ensured a win for the visitors.

Glasgow will take some solace from two late tries scored by replacement Ollie Smith, scoring a brace on his European debut, but there was no miracle comeback for the hosts.
