Leigh Halfpenny, Scarlets' top points-scorer in the European Rugby Challenge Cup this season with 40

Scarlets, second behind European Rugby Challenge Cup Pool 2 winners RC Toulon, will be looking for a bonus-point win at London Irish on Saturday to have a chance of joining the French club in the last eight.

The Welsh region, seeking one of three quarter-final places available to pool runners-up, are currently trailing three second-placed teams with their tally of 14 points.

Key facts

  • Scarlets have won all five of their European encounters with London Irish.
  • No side have won more turnovers in this season’s competition than Irish and Enisei-STM (38).
  • Scarlets have conceded just two second-half tries in the Challenge Cup this term, a joint tournament best with Bristol Bears and Leicester Tigers.
  • Scarlets back Steff Evans has made a competition-high nine offloads.

Bonus point win sends Scarlets into last eight

Scarlets celebrate the try of Corey Baldwin

Scarlets sneaked into the No.8 seed in the Challenge Cup quarter-finals after a 33-14 bonus point win over London Irish at the Madejski Stadium on Saturday night.

London Irish made a good start and got the opener on 20 minutes as Albert Tuisue powered past two players from the base of the scrum to dot down.

Scarlets really took over for the remainder of the first period, responding with a Corey Baldwin try on 25 minutes before edging ahead through a Dan Jones score.

Quick thinking from Scarlets set up a third try on 36 minutes when Kieran Hardy tapped and burrowed a way over from close range, making it 21-7 at the interval.

They got the bonus point try just after the break when the referee pointed to the posts after Scarlets’ scrum was collapsed close to the London Irish line.

Scarlets added a fifth try on 57 as a great kick from Dan Jones found Steff Evans and the winger did the rest.

Albert Tuisue would grab a late consolation for the hosts but to no avail as Scarlets secured victory and a spot in the last eight to face RC Toulon.
