England wing Dave Strettle says Saracens are ready to bounce back from the disappointment of losing in Toulouse to stay on course for a Heineken Cup quarter-final by beating Connacht.
Both teams have a chance of reaching the last eight of either competition and Strettle knows that England’s top team this season always bounce back well from defeat. Their loss in France last weekend came after a winning streak of 10 games that had been sparked by two successive defeats.
“Toulouse played brilliantly and really made life difficult for us throughout the game. They got their noses in front, were tactically very good and left us feeling frustrated,” said Strettle.
“Now we look forward to Connacht and the chance to bounce back from last weekend. One thing this group has proven in the past is that we respond well to setbacks, so we won’t dwell too much on the defeat.
“We know we will be facing a very dangerous side. Connacht have proven they are a force to be reckoned with in this pool and we’re just looking forward to getting back to Allianz Park to face them.”
Connacht are looking for their fourth win in the Pool having notched a double over Zebre and beaten Toulouse away from home. If they do qualify for the Heineken Cup quarter-finals, and Leinster get the point they need to join Ulster and Munster in the last eight, it will be the first time that Ireland have had four teams through to the knock-out phase.
Saracens have brought in England half-backs Richard Wigglesworth and Charlie Hodgson to mastermind operations and have also given Scottish centre Duncan Taylor a start in midfield. Up front, George Kruis partners Steve Borthwick in the second row and British & Irish Lions prop Matt Stevens comes in at tight head prop.
Saracens blasted their way into the last eight of the Heineken Cup but will be forced to travel away in the quarter finals. Their record breaking 11-try triumph over Connacht ensured they picked up the second runners-up spot in the last eight.
David Strettle notched Saracens’ third try hat-trick in their Heineken Cup history to condemn Connacht to a record tournament defeat. Charlie Hodgson orchestrated the mammoth victory from the outset, making the most of the Vunipola brothers who continually punctured the Irishmen’s defence.
Dan Parks had put Connacht ahead inside five minutes with a penalty from 40 metres out, but Saracens hit back straight away. Chris Ashton connecting with Hodgson’s fizzing pass to go over in the corner.
Parks nudged the away side back in front with his second penalty but they were struggling to handle Saracens’ powerful runners, coordinated by the irrepressible Hodgson. The home team had 19 gain line successes within the first 19 minutes and, with the Connacht defence in disarray, Strettle crossed in the corner for his first try.
Connacht were continually thwarted in their attempts to gain quick ball, and as frustrations grew Nathan White was sin-binned for reckless use of the boot at a ruck. Schalk Brits scored from the resulting lineout at the back of an efficient driving maul to take the half time score to 18-6.
The floodgates opened in the second half for Saracens as they scored twice in the opening 10 minutes, England full back Alex Goode making the most of poor Connacht kicking with some potent counter attacking.
It was only to get worse for Pat Lam’s men as Saracens cut through to score five tries in the final 15 minutes. Strettle completed his hat-trick with a clever chip through before Ashton finished off the rout with his signature swallow dive to grab his second and increase his club European record to 10 tries.
Saracens have now qualified as one of the two best runners up and will face a stern away test in the last eight. But they will march into the knock-out stages on the back of overtaking their previous best try haul in a Heineken Cup match of 10 against Viadana in the 2007/08 season.
