London Irish scrum-half Darren Allinson is determined to continue their flying start to the Challenge Cup at Grenoble on Sunday.

The Reading side raced out of the blocks to demolish Agen 48-10 and snatch the initiative in Pool Five. Grenoble were also beaten on their travels across the English Channel, as they slipped to a 28-10 defeat at last season’s finalists Edinburgh.

Tom Coventry’s side crossed for eight tries in total with Gerard Ellis and Alex Lewington scoring a brace, with further tries for Sean Maitland, Rob McCusker and Johnny Williams and Joe Trayfoot on their debuts for the club. And Allinson is keen to kick-on after a dream start to their Challenge Cup assault.

He said: “It was great to get out there and get some competitive rugby under my belt. We played some good rugby and scored eight tries which will give the squad confidence going into the Grenoble game this Saturday. This weekend will be a step up from Saturday. Grenoble are a good side and they have some real quality in their squad so we know what we are coming up against. We will need to push on from the performance last week and go over there and give it our best.”

“Both Scott and Brendan are great players and we get on really well off the pitch too. All three of us are competitive and we all want to play, having that competition brings out the best in us all.”

Match Facts

  • London Irish have won both matches played between these clubs in the Challenge Cup previously though they’ve been close encounters, a 43-41 victory the most recent of the showdowns.
  • Grenoble have won only two of their 14 matches against clubs from England in the Challenge Cup, though neither of those wins came on home soil.
  • London Irish have won 16 of their last 18 matches against French opposition.
  • London Irish have won 13 of their last 16 away matches though one of the three losses came against the French side Stade Francais Paris.
  • A loss in this match would be Grenoble’s fourth consecutive defeat in the competition, their worst run since losing five on the spin across the 2000/01 and 2002/03 seasons.

Clement Gelin scored a last-gasp try as Grenoble snatched a 27-20 victory over London Irish in Pool 5 of the European Rugby Challenge Cup.

The French side had led 14-0 through tries from hooker Arnaud Heguy and flanker Fabien Alexandre, both converted by Gilles Bosch, only for the English visitors to roar back with scores from centre Johnny Williams and flanker Jebb Sinclair.

Bosch and Theo Brophy Clews exchanged penalties to leave the scores level, but replacement Gelin broke clear in the dying seconds to give the home side just a third win in 15 Challenge Cup meetings with English opponents.

The Exiles had entered the game on the back of a bonus-point triumph over Agen, but their hopes of making it two from two suffered a sizeable dent as Grenoble flew out of the blocks.

Gio Aplon made a brilliant break from full-back with his pace proving too much for the Irish defence and allowing Heguy to profit by getting over the line.

The visitors barely had time to recover before the second try was scored. Grenoble remained patient as they stretched the Irish defence, with flanker Lapandre diving over as the numbers finally told.

The Exiles needed to score next and they did so when centre Williams broke a tackle and beat the over to score, with Chris Noakes converting before being forced off injured.

Bosch replied with a penalty but Irish were over for their second try right on half-time as the pack laid the groundwork for Canadian international Sinclair to rumble over, with teenage replacement Brophy Clews converting to send them in just three points adrift.
Clews added two penalties early in the second half to give the away side the lead, although Bosch soon responded to level matters.

Irish had their chances during the final stages, with Aplon making a great tackle to deny Alex Lewington in the corner, but it was Gelin who had the last word.
