Giornata 4 dell'European Rugby Challenge Cup

Giornata 4 dell'European Rugby Challenge Cup

The Liberty Stadium will be the venue for the final clash in Round One of this year’s Champions Cup as Ospreys host the 2016-17 finalists Clermont, live on BT Sport and beIN Sports. The French side will be looking to bounce back from last year’s 28-17 final defeat to Saracens, while Ospreys will be aiming to take maximum points from the pool stages like they did in the Challenge Cup 12 months ago.

  • The clubs have met six times previously, the home side on the day winning each of the six encounters.
  • ASM Clermont Auvergne have won six of their last seven games against Welsh opposition, although the one defeat in that run did come in their most recent such fixture against the Ospreys in Round 5 of the 2015/16 season.
  • Ospreys' Keelan Giles made 16 clean breaks in the Challenge Cup last season, more than any other player. He was also the top try scorer (7).

Clermont Auvergne’s sheer power was enough to earn them victory as the Ospreys’ difficult patch continued in their Champions Cup Pool 2 encounter at the Liberty Stadium.

  • Clermont got off to a sizzling start when Alivereti Raka barged through two tackles to score, before some slack Ospreys defending was exposed by Camille Lopez, who offloaded for Scott Spedding to ease over the line.
  • Rhys Webb's score reduced arrears, but the unerring boot of skipper Morgan Parra – on his 200th appearance for Clermont  – was to prove decisive. He slotted two penalties before half time, then another just after to extend the visitors' lead to 23-7.
  • Two Dan Evans tries reduced the deficit to just two points with five minutes to go, but Clermont resisted the Welsh side's pressure gallantly, and a brilliant penalty from behind the halfway line by Spedding late on sealed it.
  • Ospreys enjoyed 70% possession, but were unable to convert their opportunities when it mattered.
  • In converting Ospreys' second try, Dan Biggar passed the 500 points mark in European competition, becoming the third Welshman to do so after Stephen Jones and Neil Jenkins
