Maiden European clash for Parisian rivals

Stade Français' Adrien Lapegue celebrates with Telusa Veainu after scoring the bonus point try against Connacht in Round 4

Stade Français Paris welcome Racing 92 in the Heineken Champions Cup Round of 16 on Saturday in the first European meeting between the Paris-based teams.

Stade Français, who finished eighth in Pool B, have won three of their four home knockout games in the competition – their sole loss coming at the hands of Munster Rugby in the 2001-02 quarter-finals – with their three wins coming by an average margin of 38 points.

Pool A winners Racing, however, have won on each of their last four domestic visits to Stade Jean Bouin and have a claimed victory in two of their previous three away games in the Heineken Champions Cup knockout stage – all against French opposition.

The game kicks off at 17:30 UK and Irish time and live coverage is provided by BT Sport and beIN SPORTS.

Other key stats:

  • Stade Français Paris have won 95% of their home games in the Heineken Champions Cup (W39 L2), including each of their three games at home against French opposition.
  • Stade Français have recorded the lowest percentage of time in opposition territory among all teams remaining in this season’s Heineken Champions Cup (43%). Racing, on the other hand, possess the highest territory percentage in the competition (57%).
  • Racing have the best lineout success rate among all sides in this season’s Heineken Champions Cup, winning 28 of their 29 lineouts so far (97%). In comparison, Stade Français have won 38 of their 43 lineouts (88%).
  • No player has conceded more turnovers in this season’s Heineken Champions Cup than Stade Français’ Nicolas Sanchez (9). His five turnovers conceded against Bristol Bears in Round 3 of the pool stage was the most by any player in a Heineken Champions Cup game this term.
  • Stade Français winger Telusa Veainu has recorded 343 meters from his 26 carries in this season’s Heineken Champions Cup, giving him an average of 13.2 meters/carry, the highest of any player with more than 20 carries this term.
  • Racing fly-half Finn Russell has provided an average of 2.5 break assist passes for his teammates per game in this season’s Heineken Champions Cup, the highest average of any player in the competition. His 1.5 try assists per game ranks him joint-fourth in that category.
  • Racing hooker Teddy Baubigny has the joint-best lineout throw success rate among all players in this season’s Heineken Champions Cup (min.12 attempts), having found his man with 25 of his 26 throws (96%, alongside Stade Toulousain’s Peato Mauvaka).

Fickou scores as Racing 92 prevail in Paris derby

Gaël Fickou battles with Stade Français’ Joris Segonds before dotting down for Racing 92

EPCR European Player of the Year nominee Gaël Fickou was in fine form on Saturday as he dotted down in Racing 92’s 22-9 win over Parisian rivals Stade Français Paris in the first leg of their Heineken Champions Cup Round of 16 clash.

The French international scored the only try at Stade Jean-Bouin, with scrum-half Nolann Le Garrec kicking the other 17 points for the visitors.

Penalties from Joris Segonds and Nicolas Sanchez saw Stade Français record only nine points in front of their home crowd, and now head into next weekend’s second leg at Paris La Defense Arena looking to reverse the 13-point deficit.

Racing 92 raced into a 12-0 lead after Le Garrec successfully kicked all four of his penalty attempts in the opening 40 minutes.

However, the visitors’ lead was halved going into the interval as Stade Français’ Segonds kicked two penalties of his own in the first half.

Le Garrec had the chance to extend his side’s advantage in the second half with his fifth penalty of the game, but ended up putting his effort wide of the posts.

Fickou then dotted down, as he battled with Segonds to force the ball over the line for Racing 92. Le Garrec improved Fickou’s score to extend Racing 92’s lead.

Things then went from bad to worse for Stade Français as they were reduced to 14 men when Tolu Latu was given a red card for a dangerous tackle on Baptiste Chouzenoux.

Second half replacement Sanchez came off the bench to kick a penalty for the hosts and had the chance to further reduce the gap to seven points, but hit the post with his second penalty attempt.

A fifth penalty from Le Garrec then followed to give his side a healthy lead ahead of the two sides’ meeting on April 17.
