Exeter Chiefs travel to the Scotstoun Stadium on Saturday lunchtime seeking a place in the European Rugby Champions Cup quarter-finals

Exeter Chiefs travel to the Scotstoun Stadium on Saturday lunchtime seeking a place in the European Rugby Champions Cup quarter-finals, but any chance of progression hangs on felling Glasgow Warriors on home turf, live on BT Sport.

  • Leinster Rugby have already wrapped up top spot in Pool 3 and are assured a place in the knockout stages, while Exeter Chiefs, currently sitting second, would move to 19 points should they collect a bonus-point win, a tally which would see them in contention for one of three runners-up spots available.
  • Prior to this season the clubs had met twice with Glasgow Warriors winning on both occasions, yet this term has provided a different narrative, with reigning Aviva Premiership champions bringing a nine-match winning streak to an end with their victory in Round 1.
  • Exeter Chiefs found themselves 10-0 down to Glasgow Warriors early on in their first foray into the Champions Cup, but the hosts rallied at Sandy Park to secure a 17-10 lead and eventually run out 24-15 winners.
  • Exeter Chiefs come into Round 6 on the crest of a wave having defeated Montpellier 41-10 last weekend, while Glasgow Warriors suffered a hefty 55-19 reverse at the hands of Leinster Rugby at the RDS Arena.

Glasgow Warriors ripped the heart out of Exeter Chiefs' European Rugby Champions Cup quarter-final quest with a sensational display of running rugby

Glasgow Warriors and Exeter Chiefs have been drawn together for the 2021/22 Heineken Champions Cup

Glasgow Warriors ripped the heart out of Exeter Chiefs’ European Rugby Champions Cup quarter-final quest with a sensational display of running rugby, claiming a 28-21 win at Scotstoun on Saturday.

  • Exeter Chiefs’ slender hopes of making the knockout stages rested on them clinching a bonus-point win at Scotstoun with Leinster Rugby already wrapping up Pool 3 in Round 5, but instead the reigning Aviva Premiership champions found themselves on the wrong end of bonus-point win for Glasgow Warriors.
  • With just pride to play for Glasgow Warriors raced out of the blocks at Scotstoun, with scrum-half Peter Horne releasing Scotland full-back Stuart Hogg to score the opening try after the hosts tore apart the Exeter Chiefs defence with less than two minutes on the clock.
  • England back-rower Sam Simmonds drew Exeter Chiefs level at 7-7 on the cusp of half-time after a gruelling first period that saw the visitors denied several times, before they finally burrowed over the whitewash.
  • In a classic Champions Cup affair the match came alive in the second half, with winger Tommy Seymour and flanker Matt Fagerson crossing in two tries in as many minutes courtesy of some remarkable running rugby from Glasgow Warriors.
  • It seemed like Exeter Chiefs’ hopes were well and truly dashed, but with just 14 minutes on the clock, they offered a resilient riposte as flanker Don Armand forced his way over the line and centre Ian Whitten was quickly over in the corner moments later as the men in pink drew with seven points of Glasgow Warriors.
  • Glasgow Warriors defence was tested throughout the afternoon and proved strong enough to pass as they closed out the final 10 minutes without conceding to ensure Exeter Chiefs join them in leaving the competition at the end of the pool stages.
