Bordeaux-Begles target home quarter-final

Bordeaux-Begles fly-half Matthieu Jalibert lands a penalty in the European Rugby Challenge Cup Round 5 match against Edinburgh Rugby

With Bordeaux-Begles having already won Pool 3 in the European Rugby Challenge Cup, they will be targeting a home quarter-final when they travel to the Ricoh Arena on Saturday.

The French club ended a four-match losing streak against Wasps when they triumphed 40-30 at home to the English outfit in Round 1.

Key facts

  • Wasps’ defeat at the Ricoh to Edinburgh Rugby in Round 4 was their first ever Challenge Cup home loss in the pool stage.
  • Bordeaux-Begles are one of just two sides in the competition who have yet to be shown a red or yellow card this season.
  • The French club have conceded just one first-half try in the tournament this term, a tournament-best achievement.

Bordeaux-Begles seal home quarter-final

Ben Botica, who kicked three goals for Bordeaux-Begles at Wasps on Saturday

Bordeaux-Begles, already winners of Pool 3 in the European Rugby Challenge Cup, assured themselves of a home quarter-final on Saturday with a convincing win at Wasps.

Prior to this season, the French club had never beaten Wasps, losing four matches in a row, but the pair’s fortunes have changed drastically this term.

Bordeaux duly completed the double over the struggling Gallagher Premiership outfit, although it took them until the second half to seal the win.

The TOP 14 team were restricted to an 18th minute try from full-back Nans Ducuing converted by fly-half Ben Botica in the first half.

However, they ramped up the pressure after the break and Wasps had no response as centre Ulupano Seuteni and replacement Beka Gorgadze touched down for 53rd-minute and injury-time tries.

With Botica converting the first and kicking a 70th minute penalty before being replaced by Lucas Meret, who also landed a penalty and conversion, it proved a miserable afternoon for the English club.

To add to their misery, Bordeaux scored six points while they were down to 13 men after 68th minute yellow cards for Seuteni and replacement Seta Tamanivalu.
