Scarlets kept alive their hopes of catching Toulon at the top of European Challenge Cup Pool 2 with a thumping bonus-point victory over Bayonne on Saturday night.
Tries from Ryan Conbeer, Ryan Elias, two for Kieran Hardy, and one apiece for Angus O’Brien and Leigh Halfpenny ensured that the Welsh region won their third game of the pool stage to sit four points behind Toulon ahead of their huge clash in round five on January 11.
In virtual monsoon conditions at Parc y Scarlets,Β Conbeer showed excellent footwork to control and pick up Steff Hughes’ kick through to score the opening try, although Halfpenny’s conversion was wide, his only error of the night.
After half time, Ryan Elias touched down after a big shove by the forwards for Scarlets’ second try, and within a few minutes Hardy finished off after Uzair Cassiem’s burst through the line for a third.
The bonus point was sealed when O’Brien raced clear and Hardy’s second came after some fine workΒ by Corey Baldwin to create the chance.
Halfpenny pounced on a Bayonne error for try number six although the clean sheet was ruined right at the death when Julien Tisseron crossed the whitewash.
