The two French sides faced each other last week, and it was cat and mouse all the way with Castres Olympique eventually winning by eight points with a 36-28 score line.
It was an exciting tussle, with both sides scoring three tries apiece, but the difference between the sides proved to be down to- Perpignan indiscipline and – Romain Tuelet’s deadly accurate kicking.
On five occasions his penalties sailed through the sticks, and Perpignan need to cut out the indiscipline that plagued them.
Pool 1 is tight. The top three teams are separated by a point. But with all teams taking points off each other, it is unlikely that this Pool will provide one of the two “best runners- up” who make up the quarter-finalists once the six Pool winners take their places in the final eight.
Castres currently have 10 points, and Perpignan have nine, so it is the Catalan side who most need the win.
Perpignan kept their Heineken Cup hopes alive with a convincing 30-3 win over arch-rivals Castres Olympique at Stade Aime Giral on Friday night.
The home side led only 9-3 at halftime, but tries to prop Perry Freshwater and replacement lock Colin Gaston split the game wide open, and 15 points from the boot of Nicolas Laharrague put the result beyond doubt.
Man of the match Loaloaoa Milford, the Castres winger, admitted: “That’s the game of rugby. It’s our job to go home and work on the things we need to improve.
“The key factor was the Perpignan scrum, which put our forwards under a lot of pressure and gave Perpigan a platform.
“There were a couple of key scrums which they won against the head, one of which stopped us scoring and the other other which turned the flow of play.”
Perpignan scrum-half Nicolas Durand added: “It wasn’t a great quality game. There was a lot of dropped ball, which was partly because of the wet conditions, but also because of our unforced handling errors.
“Fortunately for us, our forwards resuced us again and again, particularly in their scrummaging. We won a key scrum against the head on our five-metre line in the first half, which interrupted Castres’ flow of play and enable us to get a firm footing.”
