Lyon take on Toulouse in an all-French affair at Matmut Stade de Gerland on Saturday evening live on FR4, with both teams able to take top spot in European Rugby Challenge Cup Pool 2 with a victory. Toulouse won the only previous meeting between the clubs in Round 3, ending a run of three straight victories for Lyon against TOP 14 sides in the Challenge Cup.
· Lyon are hosting TOP 14 opposition for just the fourth time in the Challenge Cup, winning each of the last two such fixtures (L1).
· Toulouse are yet to win away from home in the Challenge Cup having lost one and drawn one of their previous two away games, failing to score more than 20 points in either game.
· Wandie Mjekevu made 162 metres against Lyon in Round 3, more than any other player in last weekend’s fixtures crossing for a brace of tries in the process.
Lyon moved to the Pool 2 summit in the European Rugby Challenge Cup on Saturday evening with a hard-fought 21-11 win at the Matmut Stadium de Gerland.
- Flanker Julien Puricelli and winger Jone Tuva scored the only tries of the match for the hosts as Lyon drew level on points with Cardiff Blues at the head of Pool 2, although the Welsh region could move ahead on Sunday when they lock horns with Sale Sharks.
- It was Toulouse, though, who broke the deadlock on seven minutes as scrum-half Sebastien Bezy slotted a penalty kick, before full-back Sofiane Guitoune crossed in the first try of the match to give the visitors an 8-0 lead two minutes later.
- Lyon wrestled their way back into the game and two tries in 14 minutes from Puricelli and Tuva saw the hosts take the lead and a Jonathan Pelessie penalty kick secured a 15-8 advantage at the interval.
- Lionel Beauxis assumed kicking duties in the second period following his introduction to proceedings and pushed Lyon further in front with a penalty kick, before Toulouse's replacement kicker Romain Ntamack hit back for the hosts, but Beauxis closed out with a final three-pointer as the visitors were denied a losing bonus-point.
- Lyon's second victory of the campaign revives their hopes of reaching the quarter-final stages, but it is a result which leaves just two points between top and bottom in Pool 2.
