Castres travel to Gloucester in first Heineken Champions Cup clash

Gloucester Rugby's Billy Twelvetrees

Gloucester Rugby and Castres Olympique meet for the first time on Sunday in a Heineken Champions Cup Pool 2 clash, live from 13:00 BST on BT Sport and beIN SPORTS.

  • This will be the first meeting between Gloucester and Castres in what is Gloucester’s first appearance in Europe’s top flight since 2013/14.
  • Gloucester have won their last five home games against TOP 14 opposition, the victories coming by an average margin of 13 points.
  • TOP 14 champions, Castres, have won just four of 40 away games in the tournament (D1, L35), losing their last 13 on the road and not winning in England since October 2001 (v Harlequins).
  • Gloucester finished as runners-up in last season’s Challenge Cup, and were one of only two sides (also Edinburgh) to average 5+ tries per game, while their 98% serum success rate was the best in the competition.
  • Castres’ Yannick Caballero stole five opposition lineouts during the pool stage of last season’s competition, more than any other player.

Gloucester return to Europe’s elite with victory

Gloucester Rugby's number 8 Ben Morgan was named Heineken Man of the Match.

Gloucester Rugby returned to Europe’s elite club competition after five years out, by beating Top 14 champions Castres Olympique at a wet and windy Kingsholm Stadium.

The English side were in control throughout, and after Danny Cipraini and Julien Dumora exchanged three-pointers twice, Gloucester scored the first try on the match.

Wing Tom Marshall carved through Castres’ defence and put through scrum-half Callum Braley to score underneath the posts just before half-time.

With a Cipriani conversion, the Cherry and Whites went into the break with a healthy 13-6 lead.

The fly-half – who was being watch on by England head coach Eddie Jones – proceeded to slot over two penalties to extend the West Country side’s lead.

Castres scared the home side late on with converted try, as Martin Laveau crossed over in the corner but their 17-year wait to win against an English side continues.

Ben Morgan was awarded Heineken Man of the Match and his side will travel to Thomond Park next Saturday to face Munster Rugby.

You can watch the game in Limerick live on Virgin Media, Channel 4 and BT Sport.

Castres will host Exeter Chiefs in their Pool 2 match, which tou can watch on BT Sport and beIN SPORTS.
