Glasgow Warriors need to record a home victory over French side Montpellier at Firhill on Sunday afternoon to keep their Heineken Cup hopes in this season’s tournament alive.
The Warriors, who beat Bath at home and then lost to Leinster in Dublin, know they need to get a win to keep themselves in the hunt for a quarter-final place in this season’s tournament.
The Scots side does have history when it comes to beating big-name French sides in Europe, having beaten four-times Heineken Cup champions, Toulouse, away back in 2009.
Montpellier, who are in only their second season of Europe, will still be reeling from the brutal nature of the Heineken Cup narrowly losing out to both Leinster and Bath in the opening rounds of the Pool.
The French new boys reached last season’s Top 14 final and still have much to play for in this Pool and will be determined to finish of their European campaign in some style.
Glasgow Warriors moved into second place in Pool 3 of the Heineken Cup with an impressive 20-15 victory over Montpellier at Firhill.
Duncan Weir opened the scoring with a penalty after 12 minutes for the hosts but Montepllier’s response was swift with Martin Bustos Moyano kicking three points for his side five minutes later.
Weir added his second just before Eric Escande crossed for the first try for Montpellier. Bustos Moyano’s conversion gave the visitors a 10-6 advantage.
But it was Weir with two penalties before the break that pushed Glasgow back into the lead at the interval.
Replacement Ruaridh Jackson stretched that advantage after the break and wing Federico Aramburu’s touch down five minutes from time to clinch the victory for the Scottish side.
Masi Matadigo grabbed a late try for Montpellier which gifted the visitors a losing bonus-point.
