Edinburgh looking to remain top

Wasps scrum-half Dan Robson lofts a high kick in last season's Heineken Champions Cup

Edinburgh Rugby will be hoping to defeat Wasps on Friday night and remain top of Challenge Cup Pool 3. The match gets under way at 15:35 GMT at BT Murrayfield.

The Scottish side sit top of Pool 3 with seven points while Wasps are third with five points.

Key quotes

Richard Cockerill (Edinburgh): “Clearly, they’ve not started the season the way they would have liked and they’ve got a few injury issues, but that’s part and parcel of the game. Wasps are a good team, but we know that if we put our best game on the field, we’ll more than compete with them.”

Dai Young (Wasps): “If you get the results in these back-to-back games, then you’re in a strong position. If you don’t, then you’re struggling. Edinburgh are a very good team. They’ve shown over the last couple of seasons that they’re a formidable side, so we’re going to have to be at our best.

Key facts

  • This will be the first time the two sides have met in the Challenge Cup but have met four times in the Champions Cup.
  • Edinburgh are unbeaten in 14 Challenge Cup matches, but had won 13 in a row before a draw with Bordeaux-Begles in Round 2.
  • Wasps’ next victory will be their 100th across European rugby.
  • Edinburgh have enjoyed more time in possession than any other team.
  • Wasps’ Jack Willis has won eight turnovers, twice as many than any other player.

Edinburgh Rugby combat Wasps sting to edge win

Edinburgh Rugby had an early wobble – but hit back at home against Wasps to draw level at the top of Pool 3 with a 31-20 victory.

They also picked up an invaluable bonus point – but currently sit second in the pool on points difference.

Lima Sopoaga opened the scoring for Wasps with a penalty after 16 minutes, but the shocked hosts hit back quickly with Duhan Van Der Merwe crossing the line nine minutes later and Simon Hickey kicking the extra two points.

Hickey followed that up with a penalty on 35 minutes, and then it was Sopoaga who narrowed the deficit again shortly before half-time to take the visitors in at the interval just 10-6 down.

Edinburgh stepped it up in the second half, though, with quick tries from Blair Kinghorn and a second from Van Der Merwe after the resumption, with the additional points scored by Hickey again.

But Jack Willis reduced the arrears once more when he crossed on 54 minutes – and Sopoaga was on hand again to convert.

Nizaam Carr’s late try and Jimmy Gopperth’s subsequent conversion made the scoreline even more respectable for the visitors.
