Last-eight bound Clermont defeat Dragons to claim maximum points

Pato Fernandez, of ASM Clermont Auvergne, breaks away from Aaron Wainwright, of Dragons, during their European Rugby Challenge Cup match

ASM Clermont Auvergne ensured a home quarter-final in the European Rugby Challenge Cup after defeating Dragons 49-7 on Friday to qualify as No. 1 seeds with a perfect 30 points from 30 in Pool 1.

The visitors achieved a try-scoring bonus point after just 22 minutes at Rodney Gardens, with Pato Fernandez, Alexandre Fischer, Paul Jedrasiak and Remi Grosso all crossing.

French winger Grosso added his second try of the match before half-time when Clermont led 35-0.

Second-half scores from Jedrasiak and Australian Peter Betham put Dragons to the sword, but Jordan Williams’ 77th-minute try ensured the hosts were not left pointless.

Argentine fly-half Fernandez had a flawless evening off the tee as he slotted all seven conversion attempts.

Clermont’s win matched Ospreys’ record of a maximum 30 match points in the pool stage from 2016/17.
