Brive win French thriller

Clement Daguin, who scored two tries for Stade Francais Paris at Brive on Saturday

Brive edged a European Rugby Challenge Cup Pool 4 thriller against TOP 14 rivals Stade Francais Paris at Stade Amedee-Domenech on Saturday.

With both teams out of the running for quarter-final places, they shared nine tries, with Brive No.8 Otari Giorgadze and Stade scrum-half Clement Daguin both registering doubles.

Stade made a great start, opening up a 10-0 lead inside nine minutes with a penalty from fly-half Joris Segonds, who also converted Daguin’s first try.

But Brive, who won the clubs’ first European meeting in Round 1, rallied with a Giorgadze’s first try that was improved by Enzo Herve.

However, Stade’s second try – by wing Ruan Combrink on 22 minutes – gave them a 15-14 half-time cushion, after Herve goaled a try from Brive lock Victor Lebas on 28 minutes.

The entertainment continued apace after the break, with Brive taking the lead for the first time in the match via Giorgadze’s second try on 44 minutes, only for Stade to march 29-19 ahead with converted scores from wing Adrien Lapegue and Daguin by the 54th minute.

Brive were not finished, though, and hit back with two tries in 10 minutes from scrum-half Vasil Lobzhanidze and replacement Peniami Narisia that were converted by Tedo Abzhandadze to seal the narrow victory.
