Bayonne finished their Amlin Challenge Cup campaign in style but it was not enough to seal qualification to the knockout stages.

The French club knew they would have to beat Femi-CZ VEA Rovigo and rely on Bordeaux Begles causing an upset against Wasps to have a chance of advancing.

They completed their part of the job and cruised to a 14 try victory over the Italian side but it was not enough as Wasps topped Pool Three.

Bayonne raced into a 33-6 half-time lead in the south west of France thanks to tries from David Roumieu, Guillaume Bernard, Joe Rokocoko and Thibault Lacroix.

And the floodgates well and truly opened in the second-half as the Top 14 outfit ran in a further nine tries including a hat-trick for Francois Carillo.

Bayonne got off to a flying start at a wet Jean Dauger stadium and their juggernaut pack earned the lead on nine minutes following a succession of scrum re-sets.

Clement Otazo stretched the hosts lead with the conversion but Rovigo quickly hit-back through the boot of German Bosto.

The Argentinean fly-half slotted another penalty on 12 minutes to go within a point of the French club.

But Rovigo's resurgence only sparked Bayonne into life. The hosts pack flexed it's muscle for a David Roumieu try following a rolling maul on 14 minutes with Otazo again adding the extras.

The Basque club continued to pile on the pressure and they got their reward with three tries in four minutes as the Italian side capitulated.

Guillaume Bernard raced down the wing to touch down on 27 minutes before former All Black Joe Rokocoko grabbed a dazzling try on the opposite flank just two minutes later.

Bayonne stormed back up the pitch from the restart and Thibault Lacroix crashed over for a fifth try following some fine inter-play between Cedric Heymans, Marc Baget and Rokocoko.

Otazo converted two of the three tries to take Bayonne scoring spree to 19-points and the half-time score to 33-6.

Carillo crashed over for quick-fire tries before Clement Lagain pounced to go past the 50-point mark.
Otazo then got in on the try-scoring act before Rokocoko grabbed his second and Carillo his third.

Wales scrum-half Mike Phillips came off the bench to join in the try-scoring exploits before Marvin O’connor and Julien Audy finished the emphatic victory with a bang.
