Davies boots Dragons to top of Pool 1

Dragons' Sam Davies kicks for goal

Man of the Match Sam Davies booted Dragons to the top European Rugby Challenge Cup Pool 1 on a sodden night against Worcester Warriors at Rodney Parade.

Davies kicked six penalties and a conversion to put Dragons two points clear of Castres Olympique heading into January’s final two rounds of pool matches.

On just two minutes, the hosts took the lead after going through the phases and getting close enough for a long Sam Davies pass to send Adam Warren over the try line.

Davies added the conversion and then slotted two penalties in quick succession to put Dragons 13-0 up after 16 minutes in filthy conditions.

Three penalties from Duncan Weir before half time dragged Worcester back into it though and yellow cards for Ashton Hewitt and Cornell Du Preez after a coming together also kept things lively.

Brok Harris saw yellow just after the interval and Worcester capitalised on their 14 v 13 men advantage as a cross-field kick found Tom Howe who went over in the corner which Weir converted to give the visitors from just across the border a 16-13 lead.

The rest of the second half was all about the boot of Davies, however, with three further penalties putting Dragons 22-16 up. Once Ethan Waller had been red carded for flooring Cory Hill, Worcester’s task became very tough, and a sixth Davies penalty carried the Welsh side home.
