Wasps set to test Edinburgh’s run

Edinburgh wing Duhan van der Merwe, who has made the most metres in the European Rugby Challenge Cup this season

Edinburgh Rugby’s unbeaten record in this season’s European Rugby Challenge Cup looks sure to be put to the test on Saturday when the joint Pool 3 leaders travel to Wasps.

The English club have won three of their last four meetings with Edinburgh, whose solitary success came last Friday, when they triumphed 31-20 at BT Murrayfield Stadium.

Key facts

  • Edinburgh have won eight of their last nine matches against English Premiership opponents in the Challenge Cup.
  • Wasps have won 19 of their 23 home games in the competition and have never lost at home in the pool stage.
  • Edinburgh are one of six teams yet to lose a scrum on their own feed in the Challenge Cup this season.

Edinburgh snatch last-gasp win as Wasps

A penalty by Jaco van der Walt 75 seconds before the final whistle gave Edinburgh Rugby a mightily tight European Challenge Cup victory at Wasps on Saturday in Pool 3.

Edinburgh’s win puts them one point behind pool leaders Bordeaux Begles. They now play each other in round five at Stade Chaban-Delmas in a game that will go a long way to deciding who will go through to the quarter-finals as pool winners.

Simon Hickey’s 19th-minute penalty got the scoreboard ticking for the first time but Wasps scored the game’s first – and as it turned out, only try on 34 minutes when quick thinking by skipper Thomas Young enabled Nizaam Carr to cross the line, with Lima Sopoaga converting.

Neither side could land any punches throughout much of the second half, until Josh Bassett’s yellow card amidst some desperate Wasps defending on 67 minutes gave Edinburgh a glimmer.

Van der Walt slotted one penalty on 71 minutes and as the clock ticked down and Wasps fans fretted about their slender 7-6 lead, the South African was given another chance as Wasps came in at the side and he nervelessly slotted it over.
