Stade Francais aiming to continue winning run

Stade Francais' players celebrate their 2017 Challenge Cup success

Stade Francais Paris will be attempting to maintain a 100% record when they host Brive for the first time in European competition in Pool 4 of the Challenge Cup on Friday night at Stade Jean Bouin.

The 2017 winners have never lost to TOP 14 opposition in Paris in either the European Cup or Challenge Cup, winning all eight ties, including five in the latter competition.

Key facts

  • This will be the first time Stade and Brive have met in either the European Cup or Challenge Cup despite playing almost 300 matches combined.
  • Brive have won eight of their last 11 pool games in the Challenge Cup, including a victory in their last away game against TOP 14 opposition (Oyonnax in 2017/18).
  • Stade lost just 10 attacking rucks in last season’s Challenge Cup, fewer than any other side, boasting the best ruck success rate of any team as a result (98%).
  • Brive, the 1997 European Cup winners, return to European competition after a one-season absence.

Strong first half effort good enough to secure Brive triumph

Brive defeated Stade Francais in their season opener

Brive effectively had this Pool 4 clash won by half-time as they eventually saw off the challenge of Stade Francais 27-11.

The sides exchanged early penalties with Joris Segonds on the mark for the home side and Tedo Abzhandadze responding for Brive.

But scrum-half Vasil Lobzhanidze broke the deadlock with a try after 24 minutes for the visitors.

Winger Lester Etien reduced the deficit to 8-13 with the home side’s only try of the opening half but flanker Otari Giorgadze struck a decisive blow for Brive right on half-time with their second try which was also converted.

A Segonds penalty cut the gap to nine points and it remained that way until five minutes from time when Brive were awarded a penalty try to set the seal on their opening night success.

Brive will look to press on when they host Bristol next Friday while on Saturday Stade Francais travel to Italy to take on Zebre.
