Saracens

Mike Rhodes scored the only try in Saracens' victory over Glasgow Warriors

Two-time Champions Cup winners Saracens will take on Lyon for the first time in the Heineken Champions Cup on Saturday at Allianz Park, live on BT Sport and beIN SPORTS from 17:30 BST.

  • Sarries battled to defeat Glasgow Warriors 13-3 in Round 1, while Lyon were beaten 30-21 by Cardiff Blues.
  • The TOP 14 side won five of their eight games against Gallagher Premiership opposition in the Challenge Cup.
  • Saracens have won 15 of their last 16 home games with Clermont’s 46-16 success last season the exception. Each of their most recent five home defeats have come against TOP 14 opponents.
  • This will be Lyon’s first away game in the Heineken Champions Cup. They lost three of four visits to England in the Challenge Cup, with a win against London Welsh in 2014/15 the one victory.
  • Lyon were one of just two sides to have a 100% success rate at both the line out and scrum in Round 1 (also Racing 92).
  • Saracens won all 14 of their own line outs against Glasgow, no other side won as many without losing at least one in Round 1.
  • The home side will be without both Vunipola brothers as well as Nick Isiekwe through injury.

Saracens ease to bonus-point victory over Lyon

Maro Itoje streaks clear to score Saracens' opening try against Lyon in their first Pool 3 clash in 2018/19

Two-time champions Saracens comfortably beat Lyon 29-10 at Allianz Park to put themselves in the driving seat of Pool 3 in the Heineken Champions Cup.

Fly-half Owen Farrell kicked over an early penalty for Saracens, followed by England international Maro Itoje scoring a superb solo try to put Saracens 10-0 up after another successful Farrell kick.

An error from the Lyon scrum-half, Jean-Marc Doussain, gifted a chance to Sean Maitland, who collected the loose ball and dotted it down with Farrell adding the extras.

Lionel Beauxis did slot over a penalty to get Lyon on the scoreboard but the London side went into the break 17-3 ahead.

Brad Barritt, who was named Heineken Man of the Match, latched onto the back off a driving maul and pilled over to extend Saracens’ lead.

Lyon gave the English champions a scare late on after Doussain’s quick touch-and-go put Virgille Lacombe under the sticks, which Beauxis converted.

But Alex Lewington secured the all-important try-scoring bonus point for Saracens with minutes remaining, following an excellent move which the wing finished in the corner.

Saracens will host Cardiff Blues in the next round, while Lyon welcome Glasgow Warriors.
