Pau and Castres Olympique are both desperate to claim victory at Stade du Hameau though for very different reasons.
It is almost exactly a decade since Pau last tasted victory in Europe when they defeated Agen 36-12 on January 14, 2006.
Now a decade later they hope to bring an end to that agonising wait against another French side.
While were involved for many of the subsequent years following that win against Agen, they have lost their last four games in the Challenge Cup, including their only home tie against Newport Gwent Dragons in the previous round.
Paddy Butler, Mosese Ratuvou and Watisoni Votu all crossed yet it was not enough to claim their first match points of the group, against the pool leaders.
Since then, however, they have registered a key win over La Rochelle and pushed European champions RC Toulon close, losing 21-17 after scores from their recently acquired former All Blacks Colin Slade and Conrad Smith.
Six points ahead of them in Pool 2 are Castres who have rediscovered their form in the Top 14 with four successive wins, they now aim to kick-start their European ambitions as well.
Having launched their Challenge Cup campaign with victory over the Dragons they suffered a double set-back with back-to-back losses to Sale Sharks.
Similarly to Pau, they have since registered a home win in the Top 14, over Brive, and picked up a bonus point away, at La Rochelle, despite losing for the first time in five league games.
Director of rugby Christophe Urios said: “I speak every Monday with the players and it is important that players understand what is expected of them. This is essential. The player must understand this, otherwise they may not be efficient, and they must seize the opportunities.
“We have improved but I think we can still do better. There is significant room for improvement. This shows that the whole project is being understood and integrated. For us, it is comforting to know there is still a great margin of progression to be made.”
Castres kept their slim hopes of a place in the Challenge Cup quarter-finals alive as they condemned Pau to a 30-21 home defeat.
Geoffrey Palis fired Castres into the lead with a penalty after six minutes as they looked to bounce back from their 31-10 defeat by Sale Sharks. Pau have fantastic record against French opposition, beating their domestic rivals by an average of 21 points at Stade du Hameau, but a try from David Smith put them 10 points behind after 13 minutes.
Pau hooker Thomas Bianchin was then shown yellow, before Palis fired another penalty over for a 13-0 advantage. The front-rower returned to the field and made up for his misdemeanour by shunting his way over for a score. Brandon Fajardo converted to pull the hosts back into within five points at the interval.
And the revival continued after the break. The ball was worked to centre Julien Fumat who crashed over, before Fajardo added the conversion to complete the comeback from 13-0 down, to 14-13. Just as Pau snatched the lead Brandon Fajardo was shown yellow and sent to the bin, opening the door for a Castres onslaught. And Sivivatu took full advantage. He stepped his way to the line and Fajardo converted to retake the lead. And it didn't stop there. Vialelle went over for Castres second try in as many minutes to give Castres a 25-14 lead.
The bonus-point was wrapped up for Castres five minutes from time when Julien Beziat crashed over to score. The replacement hooker barged over from close range to secure a a valuable victory over their rivals. Sean Dougall crashed over for a try at the death, but it was too little, too late.
