Worcester Warriors will look to take top spot in Challenge Cup Pool 5 on Friday evening as they travel to face Oyonnax at Stade Charles Mathon. This will be the fourth meeting between the clubs with Oyonnax yet to taste victory against Worcester Warriors (D1, L2).
· These sides played out a draw the only previous time Oyonnax hosted Worcester in Round 1, 2013/14.
· In fact, that draw between the sides was the last time Worcester avoided defeat away from home, having lost all nine games on the road since.
· Oyonnax and Worcester are two of five teams yet to receive a yellow or red card this season.
Worcester Warriors’ ambitions of reaching the knockout stages of the European Rugby Challenge Cup were dented as they suffered a 27-20 defeat at the hands of Oyonnax at the Stade Charles Mathon on Friday evening.
- Oyonnax, who are currently propping up the French Top 14 table, claimed their first win of the European Rugby Challenge Cup campaign, with scrum-half Julien Audy at the heart of the action, contributing 17 points through a try, three conversions and two penalty kicks.
- Sam Olver drew first blood for Worcester Warriors as he slotted home the first penalty of the evening, but Audy soon struck back and then the visitors were rattled as hooker Joe Taufete'e was shown a yellow card.
- Oyonnax ensured their numerical advantage paid dividends, scoring two tries in the 10-minute sin bin period; centre Vincent Lasmarringues was first over the line with Audy adding the extras.
- Scrum-half Audy then took centre stage as he worked his way through the Worcester Warriors defence to claim his own score, which he converted, before adding another penalty to the home side's tally as they took a 20-3 lead into the break.
- Worcester Warriors' efforts all centred around fly-half Olver, whose try 15 minutes into the second half offered hope for the tourists, albeit such optimism was snatched away two minutes later as Oyonnax replacement forward Valentin Ursache crossed over a third try for the hosts.
- Alafoti Fa'osiliva's late try, coupled with Olver's conversion, ensured Worcester Warriors did travel home with a losing bonus-point, which leaves them two points adrift of Pool 5 leaders Connacht, who face Brive on Saturday afternoon.
