Gloucester kept their faint Heineken cup quarter-final qualification hopes alive with a bonus point win at home to Edinburgh, whose own chances were badly hit by defeat.

The power pack of the home side was the dominant factor, despite a spirited Edinburgh fight-back when the backs got ball to play with.

Brian Redpath gives his assessment of the match

Gloucester started strongly, former England centre Mike Tindall collecting a chip through to score under the posts, Willie Walker converting. The a loose pass in midfield gave James Simpson-Daniel a 60 yard run to the line, Walker again adding the conversion for a 14-0 lead.

Edinburgh refused to lie down and their backs were a constant threat, left wing Ben Cairns going over for their first try. Hugo Southwell also scored, going over in the corner shortly before half time, Chris Paterson landing both conversions.

Edinburgh Head Coach Lynn Howells tells ercrugby.com his views after the defeat

In between those tries Gloucester’s forward pressure had taken its toll, hooker Olivier Azam scoring after a driving maul from a lineout.

The second half started with Edinburgh levelling things at 22 all through a well taken try by centre Marcus di Rollo, but the Gloucester forwards had the last laugh. They dominated the rest of the half as the home team resorted to a containing kicking game before centre Anthony Allen and wing Mark Foster scored late tries to secure the bonus point and a first win in this year’s Heineken Cup for the west countrymen.
