Bordeaux-Begles came out of their trip to Siberia with a bonus point victory over Enisei-STM, and will look to secure another win this weekend against Newcastle Falcons at Stade Chaban-Delmas. Newcastle also picked up five points in their victory over Dragons last Saturday, but they haven’t won a Challenge Cup match in France since 2010.
· The sides have met twice before with Newcastle claiming victory in both pool matches in 2000/01.
· Bordeaux-Bègles scored 21 points in the final quarter of their Round 1 game, more than any other team managed in the competition.
· Adam Radwan of Newcastle beat 12 defenders in Round 1, three more than any other player in the competition and five more than Bordeaux-Bègles’ best, Matthieu Jalibert (7).
Newcastle Falcons asserted their dominance in Pool 1 of the Challenge Cup by coming from 17-7 down to escape 21-20 victors against Bordeaux-Begles at the Stade Chaban-Delmas on Saturday evening.
- Simon Hickey opened the scoring for Bordeaux from the kicking tee with a penalty, before flanker Marco Tauleigne crossed in the first try of the match, which was duly converted to give the hosts a 10-0 lead with just nine minutes on the clock.
- Newcastle's riposte came on 26 minutes courtesy of a try from No 8 Ryan Burrows and Toby Flood's conversion brought the visitors back within three points.
- But Top14 side Bordeaux went into the half-time interval with a healthy lead thanks a try from prop forward Sebastien Taofifenua, which Hickey converted to make the scoreline 17-7.
- The Falcons burst into life in the second-half with returning No 10 Flood crossing over two minutes after the break, adding his own extras, only for Hickey to kick another three-pointer to push Bordeaux's advantage to 20-14.
- It was Flood who was to have the final say, though, as he converted a well-finished try from prop Jon Welsh as Newcastle claimed a first victory in France since January 2010, bringing to an end a seven-match losing streak on the road.
